This academic year, engineering students from The Master’s University visited several companies on career development outings, meeting with company leaders and getting firsthand experience with workplaces in industries like aerospace, the power sector, and medical technology.
Dan Dubei, associate professor of mechanical engineering at TMU, has been coordinating the visits.
“The goal is to give students an idea of what engineering is,” Dubei says. “Then they can see what the job is like in real life, and if they like that sector or not. I’m trying to provide different areas of activity to find what interests them.”
During the fall semester, students toured SetPoint Medical, DrinkPAK, and Valar Atomics. They also visited several start-up companies in the L.A. area, which allowed students to evaluate and understand the realities of both established companies and newer start-ups.
These visits can serve to spark longer-term relationships with companies. When students toured DrinkPak, a canned beverage manufacturing company that serves brands around the globe, five employees from their leadership team returned the favor by touring the University. DrinkPak then decided to participate in TMU’s Career Fair. Dubei says that the company is excited about a long-term relationship with TMU moving forward, including possible internships and jobs for students. In fact, one medical engineering graduate was hired by DrinkPAK in December.
“My goal is to establish a network of companies ready to work with us to help students,” Dubei says. “We’re blessed, because God just brought a lot of people out of nowhere willing to help with the development of the network. And some of them we didn’t even know about or look for.”
Although the majority of students who participate are mechanical engineering majors, the tours are open to all TMU students through the Office of Career Services. Dubei has more visits lined up for the spring semester and encourages all students to attend.
