Last semester, several audio production students from The Master’s University toured EastWest Studios, a historic recording studio complex in Hollywood known for working with artists such as Frank Sinatra, the Rolling Stones, and the Beach Boys.
After touring the facility, students had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with the recording equipment. In the morning, members from TMU’s chapel band joined to record a worship song. Then the group spent the rest of the day recording music with a country band.
“We essentially got to do a little trade, where the students got to practice recording with a real band, and then the real band got professional recordings in EastWest Studios,” said Amos Avery, a senior audio production student. “It was crazy to think about their voices being played through the same speakers that the Beach Boys used.”
During the recording session, the students rotated through various recording roles — including the role of the producer, where they learned how to communicate effectively with the artist.
The group also enjoyed getting hands-on experience with specialized equipment like the studio’s reverb room and custom mixing board.
“In my degree, you never quite know the equipment you’re gonna have to use out in the field. Getting the experience on this equipment was really special for us. It really taught us a lot,” Avery said. “I’m just so thankful to the Lord that they let students come and do this.”
The trip was orchestrated by administrative manager Jennifer Ehlen and audio technology professors Connor Rhoden and Mauricio Gasca in TMU’s Paul T. Plew School of Music.
