PELL Grant is a need-based federal grant for low income families. A student’s eligibility is determined through their FAFSA and the amount may change based on how may units they are taking and the amount of life-time eligibility they have already used.

Cal Grant

Cal Grant recipients can request a one-year extension of their Cal Grant to cover their credentialing expenses. Students who are not currently receiving Cal Grant are not eligible.

To extend your Cal Grant, complete the G-44 Cal Grant Extension Request form and submit it to the California Student Aid Commission.

Golden State Teacher Grant (GSTG)

The Golden State Teacher Grant (GSTG) is a program through the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) where students in a Teaching Credential Program can receive a grant of up to $20,000.

To receive this grant, student must:

• Complete their program and obtain their credential within 3 years from the first distribution of GSTG funds.
• Commit to work at a priority school in California for 4 years within 8 years of completing their program.

Stafford Loans

All undergraduate student who complete a FAFSA are eligible for Federal Direct Stafford Loans. The amounts that a student is eligible for may vary depending their grade level and the amount of life-time eligibility that they have already used. Students can receive a Subsidized Stafford Loan (the government pays the interest while you are in school), and/or a Unsubsidized Stafford Loan (the government DOES NOT pays the interest while you are in school) depending on their eligibility.

Loan Forgiveness Programs

There are a number of loan forgiveness programs available to those going into the teaching profession.

Federal Program Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program – FFEL and Direct Loan Programs

Apply after five (5) consecutive, complete years of full-time teaching

• Federal Teacher Loan Forgiveness Application

Under the Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program, if you teach full-time for five complete and consecutive academic years in a low-income school or educational service agency, and meet other qualifications, you may be eligible for forgiveness of up to $17,500 on your Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans and your Subsidized and Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans.
