By TMU’s School of Music Faculty
Music, the art of organizing sound in time, is a universal language given to us by God that expresses thoughts and emotions where words cannot. The faculty of the School of Music at The Master’s University believes in the vital role and purpose of this gift and is privileged to train students to use their musical abilities to the glory of God by developing wisdom, establishing convictions and producing leaders.
One of the priorities of the faculty is to help students recognize that every aspect of music-making is worship and steward them to develop their God-given gifts to become salt and light. Close mentorship with the music faculty is a unique aspect of study at Master’s and assists our students in growing their musical skills, pursuing academic scholarship, and learning how to live as a God-first musician.
At TMU, students learn to work in camaraderie with fellow musicians, growing and maturing through numerous performing opportunities, and learning from premier music instructors in Los Angeles. Emmy Award-winning composers and recording engineers bring their expertise to areas outside performance. Graduates have gone on to attain advanced degrees in music, collaborate with prestigious opera companies, score feature films, and establish thriving performance careers.
Beyond performance, obtaining a music degree provides opportunities for a wide array of careers. Piano pedagogy graduates establish teaching studios that can bring in six-figure salaries while providing for mentorship and discipleship opportunities with pianists of all ages. Music production students are placed in prestigious music industry companies as well as within their local churches. Graduates with a variety of music degrees have gone on to music pastor positions, music teaching jobs, conducting roles, editorial and publishing, and a variety of additional music-related employment.
The disciplines of music education also transfer into every other area of the marketplace and provide a strong foundation for many non-music-related jobs. The School of Music trains individuals who have become doctors, lawyers, school and university administrators, business owners, public servants, media and public relations specialists, and pastors and missionaries.
A 2015 article in Helix Magazine, a Northwestern University science research publication, cites a study finding that medical schools accept 66% of music major applicants. The authors speculate that medical schools appreciate musician applicants because of their work ethic, ability to manage stress, and overall well-rounded lifestyle. The discipline, confidence and leadership skills developed by music study contribute to shaping the whole person.
Dr. Paul Plew, dean of the School of Music, encourages student musicians and their parents to consider the broader benefits of a music degree. “People ask me, ‘Why music?’ and I answer, ‘Because if music is your passion, the Lord has put that in you for a reason and you’d better follow it! Some hesitate to study music out of fear or practicality, but if God has given you a passion for it, that means He has a place for you. If God has called you to music, trust Him and obey.’”
The music program at TMU aims to inspire students toward excellence for the Master in every way. Since our first graduating class in 1967, more than 350 music majors have graduated and are now working in every major industry around the world. These graduates are a testimony to the work God continues to do through the School of Music at The Master’s University for His Kingdom purposes.
