Dr. Abner Chou, president of The Master’s University, took to the chapel pulpit this fall to preach on Job 38, exhorting TMU’s students to remember the greatness of God and how knowing Him is the antidote to doubt.
“I have a heart, especially early on in this semester, to establish and to extol the greatness of God,” Chou said.
“[Knowing His greatness] doesn’t just give God the benefit of the doubt; it removes all doubt, because you know our God is right. You know that even though you can’t see, and you can’t feel, and you can’t know all the things around you, He does. He does, far better than you. And even though you may be in the dark, He is light. And therefore you know He will be right in the end, and all you have to do is cling to Him, and you’ll make it home.”
The Book of Job, Chou said, is about the “bigger questions” that suffering raises about life, God, and the world.
“Job is about whether God is right in this world gone wrong,” Chou said. And in Job 38, God vindicates Himself to Job on the basis of His omniscience.
“God says this, essentially,” Chou said. “You don’t know the very land you are on. You don’t know how firm it is. You don’t know how it dissolves. You don’t know how it coheres together. You don’t know what sustains it. You don’t know what keeps it hanging. You don’t know. So what makes you think you can do better? What makes you think you can run a world better, when you don’t even know what a world is?”
Chou summed it all up this way: “You don’t know the what, when, where, why, and how. But you do know who. You do know who knows it all. And that should have always been enough.”
