IRVINE, Calif. – The Lady Mustangs took on the Northwestern (IA) Red Raiders in the second round of the Concordia Labor Day Classic on Friday afternoon. The Mustangs second showing of the day was a much needed morale booster as the Mustangs swept the Red Raiders 3-0 (25-13, 31-29, 25-19).
Set one featured a strong showing by TMC’s offense as the team boasted 19 kills, one error, and a .562 hitting percentage. Of the 19 kills, Sam Dougherty (Medera, CA) contributed five and teammate Tori Callihan (Simi Valley) chipped in four. In the latter part of the match, Callihan’s strong play secured the first set for the Mustangs at 25-13 with a decisive kill.
TMC’s second set was more of a challenge as it featured a staggering nine ties and lead changes as the Mustangs took the match with a late 31-29 win. Getting on the board early, the Mustangs took off with a 4-1 lead. However, Westminster fought back and battled the resurgent Mustangs. TMC emerged victorious off a costly attack error from Northwestern’s Madeline Hanno . Leading the charge for TMC was Sam Dougherty, the Outside Hitter notched 11 kills in the second set. Dougherty would finish the day with 17 kills and a hitting percentage of .359.
Game three was TMC’s from the very beginning as the Mustangs recorded a total of nine scoring runs. Beginning the match was a 5-1 run that got the Mustangs out of the gate early. Later in the match, the Mustangs ran tallied another five point run that would eventually be stopped by a Northwestern time out. From there, the Mustangs would continue their dominance and take the game and match at 25-19.
The Lady Mustangs will face Illinois Tech in the third round of the Concordia Tournament Saturday morning, September 1st at 11:00.
