SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The Master’s College women’s soccer team remains undefeated at 5-0 after a 5-2 victory over La Verne University on Tuesday afternoon at Reese Field.
To date, the Lady Mustangs have outscored their opponents 22-4.
“Our offensive pressure was fantastic today,” said Lady Mustang head coach Curtis Lewis. “If we continue to put away five goals per match, we’re going to win a lot of victories this season.”
The first half was relatively quiet until Jasmine Benson (Corona, CA) broke the silence at the 37:14 mark, scoring in unassisted fashion.
At the half, TMC had outshot La Verne 6-1.
Scoring continued in the second half when Jessica Long (Wailuku, HI) delivered an unassisted goal over the head of Delanie Pacheco, La Verne’s goalkeeper.
After Natasha Coyle (La Habra, CA) notched TMC’s third goal at the 58:50 mark, La Verne cut TMC’s lead to 3-1 on a goal from Megan Hodgson with 28 minutes left in the match.
Benson later responded for the Lady Mustangs by scoring off an assist from Katie Faris (Santa Clarita, CA) at the 62:56 mark.
McKinley Kane (Newhall, CA) closed out TMC’s scoring onslaught with her first collegiate goal at the 72:24 mark, putting the Lady Mustangs ahead 5-1.
La Verne attempted a comeback by scoring another goal with 13 minutes left on the clock, narrowing the Lady Mustangs’ lead to 5-2. However, a strong defensive effort on part of the Lady Mustangs closed out the match, and gave TMC its fifth win of the season.
Benson led the stat sheet with two goals, while Coyle finished with nine shots, five shots on goal, and one goal. Standout goalkeeper Ilyssa Espiritu (Bakersfield, CA) was credited with her fifth win of the 2013 campaign.
The Lady Mustangs now look to extend their winning streak to six games this Saturday at Reese Field in an 11:00 a.m. match against Corban University.
