SALT LAKE CITY, UT – Accepting the challenge of sweeping all three games at the 2012 Westminster Fall Classic, The Master’s College women’s basketball team continued their dominance of the young season by topping Montana Western 69-66 on the final day of the three-day tournament.
During the first period the Mustangs trailed the Bulldogs until Kimmy Iverson (San Marcos, CA) brought Montana Western’s lead to a close.
With three minutes left in the half, Lena Rivera (Allen, TX) tied the game at 21 with two free throws.
Entering the second period, the Mustangs again found themselves down by two, but continued to fight and tied the game at 31-all thanks to a timely layup from Whitney Best (Snohomish, WA) at 17:41.
The Lady Mustangs regained the lead with eleven minutes left on a three-pointer from Iverson.
Down by one point with 1:40 left on the clock, Best scored to bring the score to 65-64. With 21 seconds left, Rivera answered to hold the lead for the Mustangs, followed by two shots from Best to close the game at 69-66.
Iverson led the Mustangs with 17 points, three rebounds, and one assist, adding to the Mustangs' total of 69 points, 32 rebounds, 20 assists, two blocks and 13 steals.
The Lady Mustangs' accuracy highlighted the game at the free throw line by going 8-11 in the first half (72.7%) and 3-6 in the second (50%).
TMC returns to Southern California to prepare for their first home game of the 2012-13 campaign. On Friday, they’ll host CSU San Marcos with a tip-off at 5:30pm in Bross Gym.
