CLAREMONT, Calif -- The Master’s College men’s track team competed at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational, hosted by Pomona-Pitzer College in Claremont Saturday. The Mustang men are now just two weeks away from the Golden State Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships, and Pomona-Pitzer served as another step in their progression towards the end of their 2012 season.
Starting off the day, Anthony Pizzo and John Gilbertson competed in the men’s 1500m race. Both men used Saturday to sharpen-up their skills in preparation for the prestigious Mt. SAC Invitational this coming Thursday and Friday; Pizzo will race the 10k Thursday night, followed by Gilbertson in the 5k on Friday. Racing in the first and fastest of four heats of the 1500m, Gilbertson and Pizzo finished 2nd and 3rd respectively, with times of 3:51.98 and 3:54.32.
The men’s 3000m steeplechase featured the representing trio of TMC’s Matthew Crichton, David Eller and John Hurd. Crichton led the way for the Mustangs setting a new school record of 9:26.99 and finishing 3rd overall. Defeating Nathan Kemp of Westmont, Crichton is primed and ready to claim the top spot in the GSAC in the fast approaching conference championships. Freshman John Hurd ran well and achieved a new personal best of 9:52.39.
The second heat of the men’s 5k proved to be an exciting race with senior Nathan Seyler leading the way for TMC. Carrying the race for the majority of its 12 & ½ laps, Seyler ran a big final 400m, creating separation between himself and the rest of the field. Crossing the line in 15:24, Seyler won the race and set a new lifetime best for 5000m.
Next on the schedule is Mt. SAC, April 19th and 20th, where the duo of Anthony Pizzo and John Gilbertson will represent the Mustangs among some of the most elite competition in the nation.
