SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - On a hot Friday afternoon in Placerita Canyon, The Master’s College men’s soccer team pulled out a 4-3 win in nail-biting fashion over the Whittier Poets. The victory snapped a two-game losing skid to start the 2012 campaign, improving the Mustangs to 1-2.
With 4:34 gone in the opening half, TMC’s middle forward, Taylor Shahi (Santa Rosa, CA) scored the match's first goal on a header off a corner kick by Kevin Scheunemann (Malang, Indonesia). After five minutes of play, the Mustangs' defense prevented Whittier from even bringing the ball into their attacking third of the field. However, forward Srdan Jovanovic (London, England) scored Poets' first goal with 21:26 left in the first half, tying the game at 1-1.
Just after the start of the second half, TMC's goalie, Andrew Bussell (Bakersfield, CA), defended the goal from Whittier's Jovanovic, energizing both the crowd and the team. Nine minutes into the second half, the Mustangs reclaimed the lead with a goal from Zach Egeler (Colorado Springs, CO), assisted by both Jordan Edwards (Anchorage, AK) and Austin Rochow (Canyon Country, CA). Determined to keep the lead, Austin Michelson (Scotts Valley, CA) expanded the lead to 3-1 at the 56:34 mark off another assist by Scheunemann.
Just over eighteen minutes later (74:54), Whittier’s Jovanovic tallied again, scoring off an assist from teammate John Elvins (Bideford, England), slicing the deficit to 3-2. Then, just over three minutes later (78:04), the Poets knotted the game at three when the Mustangs lost their once two-goal advantage to an own goal.
But, with less than two minutes left to play (1:37), Egeler beat Poet goalie David Diaz, scoring the winning goal on assists from Vini Barauna (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Shahi.
Bussell ended the game with five saves, four of those coming in the second half.
The Mustangs will be back in action on Tuesday, September 4, at 4:00 pm on Reese Field against Bethesda Christian.
