Golf Finishes Second at California State Intercollegiate Classic
September 24, 2013
HEMET, Calif. – The Master’s College golf team concluded play at the California State Intercollegiate Classic with a second place finish on Tuesday at the Diamond Valley Golf Course in Hemet.
Collectively, the Mustangs carded an overall score of 882 (296-291-295), 16 strokes behind No. 3 nationally ranked Cal State University San Marcos (866).
“After the tournament, I told the guys that we're normally not too ecstatic finishing in second place because we play to win,” commented Head Coach Jason Semelsberger. “However, we're moving in the right direction and that's encouraging and reason to celebrate a little.”
Leading the Mustangs was Thane Ringler (Hutchinson, KS), tying for second overall at two-under 214 (71-71-72). Close behind was Nolan Sand (Hoquiam, WA) by placing fifth at one-over 217 (73-70-74).
“I saw some fight in all the guys but especially from Nolan Sand in holing some key par saves when he had to have it,” further commented Semelsberger. “Thane continues to impress in finishing one shot off the lead with a mediocre to poor event, by his standards.”
Joey Downey (Santa Clarita, CA) tied for 12th place by carding a 223 finish (76-72-75), while Josh Gardella (Littleton, CO) finished in a six-way tie for 20th place with a final score of 230 (78-78-74).
“Downey brought his round back after starting poorly in round three,” said Semelsberger. “It was also good to see Josh Gardella come back to play reasonably solid in the final round when the course was set up the hardest.”
The Mustangs will take to the greens again on October 22nd and 23rd at the CSU San Marcos Fall Classic at the Twin Oaks Golf Course, in San Marcos. It will be TMC’s final showing in 2013 before returning to play in the spring.
