Cross Country Earns Three-peat
November 3, 2012
IRVINE, Calif. - The Master's College men’s cross country team won their third consecutive GSAC Championship today at Irvine Regional Park, naming three Mustangs as All-GSAC athletes along the way. Winning the meet for the second year in a row was TMC’s John Gilbertson (Saugus, CA), breaking the course record with a time of 24 minutes and 22 seconds. Gilbertson remains undefeated for the 2012 season, and plans to continue his streak at the NAIA Cross Country National Championships on November 17th. As conference champions, the Mustangs will receive an automatic berth to the national meet, where they hope to improve on last year’s 10th place finish.
Along with Gilbertson’s individual conference championship title, David Eller (Los Angeles, CA) and Anthony Pizzo (Canyon Country, CA) earned the Mustang squad two additional All-GSAC recognitions, finishing 9th and 14th respectively.
In what was perhaps one of the closest races between the top five teams in the history of the GSAC, the Mustangs won the meet with a team score of 65 points. Trailing TMC by just 5 points to finish 2nd was Vanguard (70 pts.), followed closely by Westmont in 3rd (80 pts.). Finishing 4th was GSAC newcomer Arizona Christian (82 pts.), barely defeating 5th place Biola (85 pts.); Concordia finished 6th, and San Diego Christian 7th.
“It wasn’t a great day for us out there,” Coach Schroeder said, “but God was gracious to bless us with a win. Regardless of how we raced, we are thankful to have been able to bring home our 3rd championship victory in a row; it was a very special moment for us.”
On November 17th the men will race their final competition of the year at the NAIA Cross Country National Championships in Vancouver, WA.
